The Gift
On the 19th of June, 2010, we, the ‘Far Too Fabulous’ gifted 300 of our debut C.D.s at Mahara Gallery, Waikanae!
Inanga Rose and Michele Andrews had a dream.
To share themselves and inspire, uplift and move people with song.
Over four years the duo worked with some 16 other musicians including Andrew London (Hot Club Sandwhich) Susan Colien-Reid (Black Eyed Susie) Chris Peirce (Shaken Not Stirred) Ian Parker (Triptych trio-Rodger Fox Band) and Janet Holoborow (The Crismson Club) Then ‘Far Too Fabulous’ built and layered a 15 track all original, debut C.D.
Their objective? To share it with you.
Benjamin Franklin said the noblest question in the world is “What good may I do in it?”
Music is powerful. It affects us emotionally. Science has proven that the harmonics of sound, sets up vibrations in our bodies that effect us physically also.
Some time ago the ‘Far Too Fabulous’ started to receive some interesting, (almost creepy) feed back on how some of the songs left people feeling - good. We had to sit up and take notice!
Once - the day after having performed at a school fair (where the P.A. failed and the duo didn’t think anyone had even heard them!) Inanga went to an open home. The real estate agent recognized her at the door and said:
“I want to thank you. Your song ‘Celebrate Yourself!’ profoundly changed the suicidal thinking of my friend yesterday.”
In honor of that unknown woman we have titled our C.D ‘Celebrate Yourself’ and it is the first song on the disc- just two voices and a little acoustic bass. How simple it is to make a difference.
Other songs have been built with many voices and instruments, layering sound upon sound. Instrument upon instrument.
Track three ‘And The People’ Is a song of gratitude for all that we have and who we are as New Zealanders.
It has thirteen musicians on it, including children.
It is a response to two things:
1: the power of music to affect others positively, and
2: that how we feel and think about the world, effects the way we act in the world.
If we shift our focus to one of gratitude - regardless of our circumstances - then we are in a powerful place to affect change and bring joy to our selves and one another.
‘And The People’ is dedicated to Helen Clark, who was our Prime Minister at the time the song was written, and who instigated the Creative Communities Scheme that has assisted this project, twice!
How did that happen?
In 2006 Ginny Haynes of the Kapiti Coast Creative Communities Scheme heard the ‘Far Too Fabulous’ performing at Mahara Gallery. She invited us to apply for a kick start to our recording!
Four years later we have received a second grant towards the pressing of 300 C.Ds for gifting!
We are Kapiti Coast Women with a dream. We want to make a difference to ourselves, our community and the world - through song.
Our music is original ‘kiwiana’ and has been compared by some English friends as being the new ‘Flight of the Concords’ in its zany originality and pleasing soulful humor. The songs reflect 20 years of writing and cover all aspects of human feeling.
